Nimara Cave
Nimara Cave is located on the Nimara Peninsula / Paradise Island (Cennet Adası, Paradise Island), connected to the mainland by a very narrow isthmus, about 8 km from the center of
Marmaris. This part of the coast is part of the Marmaris National Park and is officially protected as a natural and archaeological monument.
It is believed that people were here 10–12 thousand years ago: the cave dates back to the Neolithic period, and the first mentions of a sanctuary at this site are associated with the ancient city of Fiscos (ancient Marmaris). Excavations have shown that Nimara was a place of worship for the mother goddess Leto — the mother of Apollo and Artemis: inside the cave, female figurines, altar stones, jewelry, ceramics, and traces of offerings were found. The cave was declared a protected archaeological site in the late 1990s.
Inside, you will find classic "decorations" of a karst cave — stalactites, stalagmites, dripstone formations, humid cool air, and muffled echoes. Cave butterflies, similar to those that made the Butterfly Valley near Fethiye famous, also live here.
You can reach the cave via the road to the Nimara Peninsula: by car, moped, or bicycle, following the signs to Cennet Adası. From the parking area at the trail to the cave entrance, there is a short but sometimes rocky ascent and steps, so comfortable shoes and water will be needed.
