Azmak River

The Azmak River is the calling card of Akyaka and one of the most impressive natural gems of the region. Ice-cold crystal clear water, lush greenery along the banks, whimsical shadows of reeds, and cool air even in the hottest summer — all of this creates a special, almost fairy-tale atmosphere. Rare endemic species live in the coastal thickets, and the most mysterious inhabitant of the Azmak is the cautious river otter (Lutra lutra).
Summer is especially pleasant here: you can swim in the refreshing water, sit by the shore with your legs dangling in the river, or simply enjoy the coolness in the shade of the trees. Usually, people access Azmak from a small forested area where locals and tourists like to relax. If you prefer more secluded and shallow spots, choose the approach to the water from the coastal restaurants or hotels — it’s quieter and calmer there.
Boat trips also take place on the river: a short tour of the Azmak is a great way to see how the river smoothly transitions into the sea near Akyaka beach. Due to boat traffic in the narrow sections of the riverbed, it’s better to stay closer to the shore if you are swimming.
Azmak is the perfect place to start your day with a refreshing swim or to end it with a leisurely walk along the water. Try simply lying on your back, surrendering to the current, and listening to the sound of the river — it’s truly relaxing. In the evening, it’s worth visiting the riverside fish restaurants: with a glass of wine or rakı, along with Aegean meze and fresh fish, the view of the river becomes even more magical.
